Warning, this is me stepping up onto my soapbox!!! Let me begin by saying I know people will and do eat very unhealthy food. People smoke, drink too much, take drugs etc. That is life. What I don’t understand is the glorification of things which have no socially redeeming value and are created simply to make money and to hurt our hearts. This morning while getting ready to come into my office, I had the news on and today is the grand opening of the Del Mar Fair. Well known, for its deep fried yucks, this morning jumped the shark. They were talking to Chicken Charlie who they said is a legend at the Del Mar Fair and he was introducing his new items this year:
1. Bacon Affair: 1.5 pound turkey leg wrapped with 1 pound bacon and deep fried.
2. Deep fried spam.
3. Deep fried kool-aid
4. Deep fried breakfast cereal.
Sorry, but this is just wrong. Now every time I post something like this I have several folks who jump on immediately and say that sounds delicious, can’t wait to try it, yum etc. I am asking you to please, please, not do that. I don’t think this is cute, or funny and am appalled at how callous marketing has become without a shred of concern for our health. So please instead of some “funny” quip think about someone you love and seriously consider would you want them to be eating one of each of these today. Seriously? Think about it.
OK, stepping off my soapbox. Was going to say, sorry if I offended anyone, but on 2nd thought, I’m not. There are some things which just aren’t funny or justified in pursuit of a bigger market share.
